Brazilian legend Jose Roberto Bertrami passed away on July 9th aged 66. Chief composer and leader of Azymuth, which formed in Brazil in 1972, Bertrami was credited with mixing samba, bossa nova, jazz, funk, folk rock and swing elements in his music, otherwise known as samba doido. During the early 1980’s Azymuth released an outstanding string of albums on the Milestone label including “Telecommunications,” “Rapid Transit,” “Cascades” and my personal favorite: “Outubro.” Every collection should include at least one Azymuth album. I saw Azymuth several times at Howard Rumsey’s Concerts By The Sea and it was always a thrilling experience-hard to believe that a trio could have such a “big” sound. Check Out “Dear Limmertz” Or “Jazz Carnival” for a peak at the genius of Jose Roberto Betrami.
