I bumped into the owner of Spanish reissue label Jazz Workshop on my latest trip to Los Angeles (at Atomic Records) and happened to mention that I had never been able to find a passable copy of Benny Golson’s “Just Jazz” LP on Audio Fidelity and had been tolerating a noisy copy just to hear the great solos and ensemble playing from the likes of Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans and other jazz greats featured on the LP. It just so happens that this is one of the first titles in Jazz Workshop’s excellent jazz reissue series. “Just Jazz” was one of those albums the critics didn’t care for and it quickly disappeared without trace, but to these ears, it is definitely an unjustly forgotten gem. Other great titles that we will be uploading to the site on March 23rd are: Bill Barron & Ted Curson “Now Hear This” / Paul Chambers “A Jazz Delegation From The East” / John Coltrane “Coltrane” / Pepper Adams & Jimmy Knepper “Pepper & Knepper” / Art Pepper “The Return Of Art Pepper” / Ronnie Scott & Tubby Hayes “Couriers Of Jazz” Plus A Handful Of Other Great Titles. We just received our shipment of these limited edition 180gm pressings and I have to say that we have split open and played several titles already and the vinyl is dead flat and quiet and the jackets are made of high quality card. At only 500 pressings of each title, these are not going to be around for long.
