Shattered Music is a very small, independent record company in California specializing in rock and roll music. Shattered produced a handful of releases by Los Angeles area bands in the mid 1990s, and started up again in late 2011 with a new catalog of previously unreleased bands.

The catalog which Shattered Music will be producing is comprised of lost, long defunct groups who have at least one brilliant recording despite never gaining any recognition in their time. Many of these recordings were originally produced in the Bay Area by Jim Sorensen and Outlaw Blues, and sat in a vault for decades until Sorensen played them for friend Robbie Pettersen .

Nimbus, a psych-rock band with blues influences, is the first of these recordings which Shattered Music is releasing. “Nimbus: Live in Livermore,” was recorded on Saturday, March 14, 1970 in the Veterans Hall in Livermore, CA. With long, free-form jam style songs and enough pedals and switches to nearly blow the sound system offline, this raw performance immediately transports listeners to another time. This limited edition, numbered LP is pressed on colored, marbled vinyl and is limited to only 500 pressings housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket. Upcoming projects include the enigmatic blues experience that is Mordecai.

I guess I should subscribe to Rolling Stone, but never get enough time to read all the other mags like TAS, Stereophile, Down Beat, Jazz Journal and the likes as it is, so I picked up a copy of this chunky tome at Whole Foods checkout with a price tag to match their food. Voted on by a total of 371 artists, producers, industry executives and journalists, the Beatles take the number one spot with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” with the Beach Boys close behind with “Pet Sounds.” Not too surprising, but as we look through this bumper 120 page $12 special there are a few that are difficult to fathom: the best the Floyd could manage was spot #43 with “Dark Side Of The Moon,” beaten out by the likes of The Sex Pistols’ “Never Mind The Bollocks” at #41, Love “Forever Changes” at #40, John Lennon’s “Plastic Ono Band” at #23 and a few more – Egad! Well it is opinion after all….and it’s still a fun read and a possible turn on to albums that might have slipped our attention. We have LPs spinning here in the office all day, every day and we still fall prey to the audiophile’s curse-there are just not enough hours in every day to listen to everything we want to hear.

We have an almost complete set of the original Absolute Sound Magazine when it was still a true high-end journal. They stretch all the way back to Volume 1 Number 1 from Spring 1973 (rare cover art version). The first four issues are bound in the original outer protective plastic binder along with issues 5 through 8, which come in a second white plastic binder. We then have all the small format issues up to 115 with the exception of issues 20, 28,29,30, 95 and 105. All the pages and covers are intact, although some have obviously been read several times. This set reveals unique insights as to how the High End has evolved over the past forty years including many in-depth reviews of Decca SXLs, EMIs plus of course many reviews of LPs on publisher Harry Pearson’s Superdisc list. We have seen the first issue alone sell for $250 and many individual titles selling in the $25-$40 range making this a unique opportunity to purchase an almost complete set of this great reference work. $950 (or best offer) plus shipping.

I have to say that this is one amazing turntable / arm/ cartridge that has to be one of the great bargains in vinyl playback (or shellac for that matter, as this puppy spins 78s as well as LPs and 45s at the turn of a knob). Not only does it have a gorgeous midrange, but it plumbs the depths as capably as the Basis / Graham / Cardas Heart combo (I hasten to add that my Cardas Heart is a little long in the tooth)besides having slightly more punch to the bass. Soundstage width and depth is also outstanding as are the high frequencies – all in a package that is the height of clean design. Picture One features the Concept on the new $20,000 Roman pillar stand (just kidding). Shot two shows the tracking force being checked with the very last stylus tracking force gauge that good friend John Michell made for me. A very elegant and simple design that is fun to use. John made just a few of these by hand, but was much better known for his Gyrodec turntable as well as the Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference that was seen in Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange.” John was one of the true gentlemen of the British Hi-Fi fraternity.

I have been very busy these last few weeks traveling to view record collections from the boiling hot and smog-bound Hemet to beautiful mile high Idylwild and so on to fog-bound and chilly Pacifica just south of San Francisco with a trip to Los Angeles thrown in for good measure. The results are a severely aching back and three excellent, mid-sized collections totaling some four thousand superb condition LPs.

It’s very gratifying to see that some collectors really take care of their records by treating each as a little treasure by sleeving, shelving, playing and storing them correctly. (It’s great not to encounter those insidious LAST stickers and the cloudy vinyl that accompanies them for a change) So what are some of the highlights you might ask? Well we already have over a thousand up on the site and are working diligently to upload as many as possible. Here are just a few: The original Black Sabbath UK Master Of Reality in the flip-back, box style jacket, the deadly rare Robert Sheckley’s “In A Land Of Clear Colors” box and book, Shirley And Dolly Collins “Anthems In Eden,” tons of Who, Jimi Hendrix, Eno, Roxy Music, Style Council, The Hampton Grease Band “Music To Eat,” Geordie’s “Hope You Like It,” rare LPs by May Blitz, Year 2000, Manfred Mann, Juicy Lucy, John Mayall, King Crimson, Gun, Traffic, Groundhogs And many others. There are also a lot of original English Track and Vertigo LPs and lots of classic U.S. rock from the late 1960’s to the mid 1970’s. Virtually every LP we have examined so far looks like it has never been on a turntable (factory fresh in fact) and many of the U.S. pressings belonged to a collector who left the shrink wrap intact with custom hype stickers in place.

It is with great sadness that I have to report that friend and fellow record nut (collector extraordinaire might be more accurate), Brooks Berdan, proprietor of Brooks Berdan Ltd in Monrovia, California passed away on July 8th. I have fond memories of digging through crate after crate of records at the Pasadena swap meet (back in the early ‘80s) at 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning side by side with Brooks, then showing off our finds to each other. Brooks brightened thousands of lives with the gift of music for sure. Rest In Peace, Brooks.

OK, so it’s not quite a torpedo and it’s nowhere near as heavy as it looks, but this big ‘ole thing turned up at Freakbeat Records in Sherman Oaks recently and via the bush telegraph, Tom Petty found out they had it in stock and bought it for his own collection of memorabilia. Pictured here is owner of Freakbeat, Bob Say, about to load the sucker into the back of Tom Petty’s secretary’s SUV. Only in L.A………
